Upcoming goodies!
I’ve been away for a bit but have no fear, I’m back. Between laptop issues, work, and life, I haven’t been able to post as much as I would like to in recent months. Thankfully things seem to be slowing down a bit and I have a little bit more free time to hit the blog. There are a TON of things going on right now and I hope to cover all of them. Let’s get started!
Unless you’ve been under a rock, you probably know about the massive flick that’s hitting the big screen this week! Godzilla: King of the Monsters promises to be filled with more kaiju love than you can handle. The film stars Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring film series), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), and many other great actors and features legendary creatures such as Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. I probably won’t see it this weekend, but I will try to catch it later next week.
I do plan on seeing Brightburn this weekend. It’s been out for a week now, so the audience will probably be a bit thinner this Saturday or Sunday. Produced by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) and Kenneth Huang, and written by Gunn’s brothers, Mark and Brian, the film takes a look at a world where a very Superman-like child becomes evil and humanity has to square off with him. It’s received mixed reviews so far, but I still want to check it out.
Over the weekend I watched Netflix’s Rim of the World. It follows four misfit kids as they battle aliens in order to save the world. The film had a ton of potential and a few bright spots, but it was ultimately a disjointed and forgettable film that couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a Goonies-inspired adventure or a borderline R-rated action/horror flick. The four young stars of the film are Jack Gore (Billions, The Kids Are Alright), Miya Cech, Alessio Scalzato, and the highly annoying Benjamin Flores, Jr. (The Haunted Hathaways, Game Shakers).
Cech and Scalzato delivered the best performances in the film, but the Nickelodeon-like potty humor mixed with rough language and violence made the film too silly for adults and too scary and mature for the kids. The film’s writer, Zack Stentz (co-writer of Thor and X-Men: First Class), should have catered to one audience or another instead of alienating both demographics.
Doom Patrol finished up its first season last Friday. It ended much like it began, with completely bizarre events that made perfect sense despite being absolutely insane. It’s the brightest star for DC Universe at the moment, but Swamp Thing looks very promising. Its first episode will be available on Friday, May 31st.
I have high hopes for the series. Producers Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica, Hemlock Grove, Falling Skies)and Gary Dauberman (Annabelle, It, The Nun) are promising to lean heavy on the character’s horror aspects and with their successful work in other franchises, I’m pretty confident that they will give DC another winner following the success of both Titans and Doom Patrol.
I’ve also been re-watching Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot. All of its seasons are available on Amazon Prime at the moment and having been a big fan of the series when it originally aired, I’m glad to relive Bobo, Ranae, Matt, and Cliff’s adventures seeking out Sasquatch. If you’ve never watched this series, give it a look. It doesn’t matter if you believe in Bigfoot or not, this group is fun to watch. Ranae is the group’s lone skeptic and is often the sole voice of reason in certain situations. She’s also found to be speechless at times when certain things occur that she cannot explain. Cliff and Bobo are perhaps the two most enthusiastic members of the group, but Cliff will often take long and hard looks at the evidence before declaring something to be “squatchy.” Bobo is hilarious and his self deprecating humor is great. Matt is usually the straight man in the group and will quickly call out hoaxes when he sees them.
I’ll review Brightburn and Godzilla: King of the Monsters as soon as I see them. I also plan on making a post about upcoming conventions. Thank you for catching up with me. I’ll see all of you real soon!
